There are other less well known or specialist networks.
SAN - Storage Area Network
A Storage Area Network is a specialised high speed network of data servers with the sole purpose of providing what appears to be one vast storage facility to the client. You will find SANs in data centres
MAN - Metropolitan Area Network
A metropolitan area network is smaller in extent than a WAN but much larger than a LAN.
For example the London Metropolitan Network provides a high speed data backbone and connections to individual educational institutions in London.
Many cities are now planning Wi-Fi based MANs for their citizens.
