4. Networked training course
This is a very common form of computer based training both at school and and at work.
It can take a number of forms.
a) Linear presentation
This is the simplest type of training package. The course is set out in a linear fashion from the start to the end. Each student just works their way through the course. Everyone gets the same learning experience. The advantage is that it is simple to set up and maintain. The disadvantage is that it takes no account of the current ability of each student.
b) Linear with pre-assessment
With this kind of course, the student undertakes a pre-assessment test that is designed to indicate their level of existing knowledge. Once the assessment is complete, a tutor may set up a personalised course for them by selecting from a number of modules. There are also automated applications that try to do the same allocation as a real tutor.
The advantage of this kind of course is that the student receives a course tailored to their requirements. The disadvantage is that it takes time to prepare the course which can be a problem if there are many students. This is where an automated system is more practical than an individual tutor preparing the material.
c) Non-linear course
With this kind of training, the student interacts with the course and their next learning experience depends on what their progress. This kind of course has a branched tree-like path through the course. The decision point may be the result of a test or it may be a set of options presented to the student.
