An musical instrument interface standard. Short for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. The important point to note about MIDI is that it is a 'control interface' - it does not involve the music itself.

For example an electronic piano can be told, through the MIDI interface, to trigger the #C sharp' key, hold it for a second then let go. A bit like a back seat driver telling the driver what to do.

Most electronic instruments can include a MIDI interface so an artist can use machines such as a MIDI sequencer to control the sound of whole bunchof instruments.
