Text Editor

A text editor is an application that can be used to create and modify text files.

A text editor is different from a standard word-processor in that it is designed to only handle text rather than all the fancy formatting that goes with a full word processor.

The text files tend to be just made up of unformatted lines of text.

The advantage of having files in this format is that they are normally very small and can be read by almost any other text editor or even word-processor.

The text editor itself is also a very small application. For example Windows Notepad is only 68kB. Compare this to a full blown word-processor such as Word which is more than a 150 times larger at 11MB.

This means it is very easy to store the text editor application itself along with your text files if required.

Examples of text editors: Windows Notepad, Window Word, Linux vi
