Primary Storage

There are two main types of storage within a computer namely 'primary' and 'secondary'.

Primary storage is the first point of call when the CPU is fetching or storing data. Primary storage is usually volatile for example Random Access Memory (RAM).

Primary storgage is very fast compared to secondary storage. For example RAM (primary storage) is much faster than a hard disk (secondary storage).

But the disadvantage of RAM is that all data is lost when the power is switched off, hence the need for secondary storage.
