Back Door

A programming term.

A 'back-door' is a secret way of getting into the system and by-passing the security checks.

The person who wrote the original software may have built in a 'back-door' that triggers when the software receives certain commands. (They would certainly be in trouble as UK law takes a very dim view of this kind of behaviour e.g Computer Misuse Act)

Many software systems have security built into them. For example, some financial software may have passwords and even encryption included to only allow authorised persons to use it. This program would be running on a computer or server.
