Athlon

Launched in 1999, this is the trade name given to a very popular and powerful range of microprocessors. The trade name is owned by AMD or Advanced Micro Devices.

They are the equivalent of the Intel Pentium processors and were used as the CPU within many modern home computers. They are x86 instruction set compatible, which means they can run all x86 software and operating systems.

In 2008, AMD launched the more powerful 'AMD Phenom 64' processors which are multi-core and 64 bit.
