6. Accommodation within a system

This aspect contains all the physical spaces needed to support the people and technology within the system. Just where people reside will depend on the kind of organisation that the system is describing.

But practically this usually includes

  • Offices. There may be one building where the entire system (organisation) is located. Or it may be several buildings close together such as an University campus. Or it may be a scattered set of buildings such as all the branches of a company dotted around the country or overseas.
  • Factories. These are dedicated to production. For example car companies will have one or more factories to build their cars
  • Mobile accommodation. Many organisations are not fixed in one place. For example a cruise ship. There are hundreds of people on a ship that as a whole make up the system called 'cruise liner'. Another example is a floating oil rig, these are dragged to their location then stay there until oil production is finished, then it is floated somewhere else.
  • Customer facing outlets. This kind of accommodation allows customers to interact with the organisation. For example, shops on the high street. Or a multi-story car park where customer pay to leave their vehicles for a bit.
