Passwords

Watch this:

  • Watch this video about passwords. You will need headphones.

Do this:

 

  • Double click the Word icon on the right to open the document. Save it into your 'online safety' folder calling it: 'passwords'

Write this:

  • Answer the questions on the worksheet and save your work

Remember this:

  • You don't want people to be able to guess your password. You should NOT set your password to be any of the following things:
    • Your name or nickname
    • Your pet's name
    • Your birthday
    • Your families names or birthdays
    • Your football team or favourite pop star
    • Words found in a dictionary

Do this:

  • Go to: https://password.kaspersky.com/
  • Enter a password that is similar but not the same as one of your passwords
  • Test it on the site to see how secure your password actually is.
  • How long would it take for a hacker to crack your password?

Do this:

  • Next put in a whole set of random upper and lower case letters, some numbers and symbols - it doesn't have to make any sense at all.
  • See if you can make a password that would take centuries to crack.
  • Did you make one?
  • How easy would it be to remember that password? Probably not very easy.

Remember this:

  • A good password has:
    • At least 8 characters
    • Uses letters, numbers and symbols
    • Includes both upper and lower case letters

Information:

    A great way of making a secure password is to come up with a sentence such as this:
    • "My dog Sam loves cheese and hotdogs"
    • Use the first letters of each word and and substitue symbols where you can:
    • MdS^c&h!
    That would be a very secure password - no one would guess it or crack it.

     

    • How about:
    • "I hate Mondays but I love weekends because I lie in"
    • This could become:
    • IhMbI^wbIli

    Try this:

    • Come up with a password for the following sentence:
    • "My name is Harry and I live at number 22"
    • Test it in the password tester on the Kaspersky site
    • How secure was your password?

      •  

    • Try making a password for the following sentence:
    • "*Manchester United are the number 1 football team*"
    • Test it in the password tester on the Kaspersky site

    Try this:

    • Now write a sentence that applies specifically to you.
    • Create a password from your sentence
    • Test it in the password tester on the Kaspersky site
    • How long would it take to crack?

    Remember this:

    • Keeping your passwords safe:
      • Never tell anyone your passwords
      • Don't write them down
      • Change them at least every 6 months
