AFL Questionning

As a teacher, one of the key things that we need to do is to assess the progress and learning that our students have made during our lessons.

Questionning is one of the main tools that we employ to check our students' understanding. But what is a good question for AFL?

We should be aiming for open ended, probing questions. Questions such as 'Which software would you use to make presentations?' are not a good example of AFL. They expect a specific answer and don't encourage students to develop their thinking or understanding.

Examples of questions that could be used for AFL:
How did you work that out?
Why might some people believe that ...?
What might be another way of explaining ...?
How would you do it differently next time?
What did you do differently to your original plan and why?
Can you think of a better way to do that?
How could you use what you have learned in another subject?
Who did this in a different way to you? Why do you think their method also worked?
How will you make sure that you remember that next week?
Explain how you know that is the best way to do xyz ...
What happens if ....?
What do you think is going to happen when you ....?
What stayed the same and what changed when ...?
